Nancy R. Cortright

December 31, 2009

Nancy R. Cortright, 50, loving wife and mother, died on December 31, 2009 at Maine Medical Center in Portland, following a long and courageous battle with ovarian cancer.

She was born in Sanford on August 17, 1959 one of four daughters born to Edward H. Ross of Lyman and Gloria Fields Ross of Waterboro. Nancy attended elementary school in Lyman and graduated from Massabesic High School with the class of 1977. While in school, Nancy was quite an athlete and enjoyed playing basketball and softball. She was a member of the softball team when Massabesic won their first state championship.

Nancy was employed for 23 years at Sprague Electric where she worked as a mechanic and then in quality control. She married her husband, James Cortright on May 5, 1984 and together they enjoyed being home and raising their two children. Nancy loved being involved in the community; she was a member of the No. Waterboro Community Baptist Church, Waterboro Grange, York Pomona, Maine State and National Grange and Eastern Star. Nancy was also a coach for the Odyssey of the Mind Teams and was so proud when Massabesic won the 2001 finals.

Nancy was extremely proud of her daughter, Leeann who recently graduated from college and of her son Nathan who achieved becoming an Eagle Scout. She loved being with her family and friends; watching old reruns of Bonanza and M.A.S.H. Nancy possessed a natural curiosity and was respected for her intelligence. She was outgoing, fun-loving and once she set her mind to a task at hand, and her determination could not be broken. Nancy and James celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary in Orlando, Florida being young and foolish again – exploring Disney!

She is survived by her loving husband, James “Jim” Cortright and her devoted children, Leeann and Nathan all of Shapleigh; her mother, Gloria of Waterboro and her father, Edward of Lyman; three sisters, Brenda Dyer of Waterboro; Barbara Tremblay and husband Donald of Waterboro; and Patricia Brown and husband Peter of Oakland; several nieces, nephews and extended family.

Family and friends may call on Wednesday, January 6th from 6 – 8 p.m. at the Autumn Green Funeral Home, 47 Oak St., Alfred. A Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, January 7, 2010 at the North Waterboro Community Baptist Church at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Timothy Hutchins, officiating. Committal prayers and burial will be later in the spring at Chadbourne Cemetery in Lyman.

Psalm 61: verse 3-4: For thou art my refuge, a strong tower against the enemy. Let me dwell in thy tent forever! Oh to be safe under the shelter of thy wings!
